1 - Think Before You Toss
a shampoo bottle, a phone book, a pizza box, or anything in the garbage, it just
might be reusable or recyclable. Call the Center for Ecological Technology to have a guest
speaker come to your community organization to talk to you about the benefits of the 3
Rs - reducing, reusing, and recycling. Learn what garbage you have to throw away,
how to create a safer environment by using fewer toxic products, and how to save money and
time by reusing your waste, as well as other practical information. CET gives
presentations on this and other environmental topics. And it's free! Contact CET at (413)
445-4556 or www.cetonline.org for more information.
2 - Protecting New Hampshire's Damaged Forests
Was your property damaged by the devastating ice storm of 1998? Do you know anyone who
suffered property damage from the storm? Monetary assistance is now available to those
landowners that suffered economic loss because of the storm. The Society for the
Protection of NH Forests, the NH Division of Forests and Lands, and the UNH Cooperative
Extension created a program that will provide grants to landowners to help cover the costs
of placing a conservation easement on their damaged land or donating their land to a
forest conservation organization. For more information, contact your UNH Extension office
or Paul Doscher at the Society, (603) 224-9945 or by email, pdoscher@spnhf.org.
3 - Send Your Kids To Camp!
Do you need a break from your kids' summer vacation? How about sending them to camp? The
Visual Arts Center, a Massachusetts Audubon sanctuary, will host three Summer Art and
Nature Day Camps throughout August. The first two sessions are for children 7-9 years old.
The third session is for children 10-12 years old. Kids will learn about the relationship
between nature and art by exploring the Centers woodlands and wetlands and
participating in hands-on activities, such as stamp making for younger kids and
sculpturing for older kids. For more information, call the Visual Arts Center at (781)
821-8853, or visit www.massaudubon.org.
4 - Preservation Society Adopts a Sister
The Preservation Society of Newport County recently created a sister institution
relationship with the State Memorial and Natural Preserve Museum-Estate of Leo Tolstoy,
Yasnaya Polyana, in Russia. The two institutions will share their experiences and
information, pursue joint projects, and encourage other American and Russian museums and
historic sites to enter into similar relationships. For more information call the
Preservation Society at (401) 847-1000 or visit www.NewportMansions.org.
5 - Are You Ready To Ramble?
This Saturday, July 29th, is the Tenth Annual Taconic Mountains Ramble, which will take
place on the Killington section of the mountains. The Green Mountain Club, along with the
Appalachian Mountain Club, is hosting the event. So bring your hiking gear and a camera
and enjoy the scenic waterfalls, rolling meadows, and a Japanese garden! Rambling from the
group is encouraged at several different points along the hike. Gather afterward on the
lawn for some wine and cheese, and mingle with your fellow hikers. For more information,
contact Kit Davidson at (802) 273-2982 or www.GreenMountainClub.org.
Award Time
Do you know someone that deserves an award for being a great environmentalist? Or maybe
you think you deserve one yourself? Then nominate them (or yourself) for an
"Environmental Friend of New England" Award. The 4th annual awards are sponsored
by the Environmental Federation of New England and are given to individuals and businesses
in New England for their exceptional contributions to the environment. Visit www.GreenForNewEngland.org for more
information.
