1 - Eat, Drink, and Rally
Wake up and smell the coffee. Save the Wheaties for another day and instead
attend a breakfast rally for Rhode Island's $34 million Open Space Bond referendum.
The gathering begins at 8:00 AM on Tuesday, September 19, at the Casino at Roger Williams
Park in Providence. A portion of the rally will include the results from a new poll
indicating exactly how Rhode Islanders feel about this Open Space Bond issue.
Coffee and pastries will be available for those who did in fact skip their Wheaties.
For more information, contact the Preservation Society of Newport County at (401)
847-1000, ext. 128.
2 Green in Your School
Math books have replaced comic books and kids all over are writing about what they did
for summer vacation. It can only mean one thing
school is back in session. With
the new school year comes the return of Greentimes, the environmental newsletter
written for kids by kids and published by the Global Habitat Project. More than
32,000 readers in the school systems of Boston, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Lawrence,
Lowell, Lynn, Somerville, and Waltham learn about water, energy, biodiversity, Earth,
plants, and endangered species through the newsletter. So, get involved! Students in
urban public middle and high schools are eligible to write and edit articles and serve on
the youth board of the paper. If your school does not currently receive Greentimes
or you are interested in getting involved, call GHP at (617) 868-5760 or visit www.greenscreen.org.
3 - Get the Guide
The changing colors of fall will soon make their way into New England. Is there
a better way to view them than on a canoe trip down the Charles River in Eastern
Massachusetts? Of course not! Don't forget to pack the new Charles River Canoe and
Kayak Guide, recently published by the Charles River Watershed Association, an essential
tool for planning your trip. The waterproof pocket-sized booklet contains maps of
the 78-mile River, from Hopkinton to Boston Harbor. The maps are supplemented with
information about access points, boat rental outlets, scenic areas, hazards, and paddling
tips. The Guide can be obtained for $10 from CRWA by calling (617) 527-2799 or by
visiting www.crwa.org.
4 Where the Wild Things Are
The Northeast is home to big cities, remote vacation getaways, rural communities, and
the wilderness. It is this last aspect of the Northeast that will be the focus of
the conference, "Something Wild, Something Managed: Wilderness in the Northeastern
Landscape," at Middlebury College, VT on October 5-6. The two-day conference
will focus on the role of wilderness in the larger northeastern landscape. Liz
Thompson, of The Nature Conservancy - Vermont Chapter, will be a panelist on the 6th
discussing "The Values of Wilderness." The conference will conclude with a
keynote address by noted author and Adirondack resident Bill McKibben. For more
information, contact The Nature Conservancy at (802) 229-4425 or Middlebury College at
(802) 443-5710.
5 - Do Your Homework
While the kids are busy with their classes, why not take a few of your own? The
New England Wild Flower Society is in full swing with their Fall/Winter 2000 class
schedule. Courses in horticulture, botany and environmental studies, plus field
trips, special events and tours are available in locations throughout New England.
Offerings include: Ecology of Thoreau's Walden Woods, Ferns in the Fall field trip,
Woodland and Garden as Healing, Tree Observations, and, for those days when the kids are
not in school, there are a variety of family and children programs. For more
information or to obtain a course catalog, contact the NEWFS Education Department at (508)
877-7630, ext. 3303 or visit www.newfs.org.
