1 - Outside the Classroom Walls
"Can we have class outside?" Students of all ages have been asking
that question for generations. The New England Wildflower Society will host a
symposium Saturday, December 2 for teachers, educators, parents, and landscape designers
to consider the question more seriously. In short, how can the natural world foster
childrens learning? Presentators will consider both the theories behind
outdoor learning at each stage of a childs development as well as successful
programs educators have used to incorporate the local environment into learning. The
program will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wellesley Community Center. For
more information, look for symposia at www.newfs.org
or call 508-877-7630.
2 Congratulations!
Tip your hat to the Farmington River Watershed Association. FRWA recently
celebrated its 48th year of working on behalf of one of Connecticuts
greatest resources. Did you know that the Farmington River is not only a great place to
canoe, kayak, or spot bald eagles but it also serves as a primary source of drinking water
for Greater Hartford and as an important source of hydroelectric power? Find out
more about FRWAs recent celebration as well as the latest information on river
conditions at their website www.frwa.org or by calling
860-658-4442.
3 - Stay Out of the Woods!
Contrary to their usual message that we should all spend more time discovering the
Green Mountains, the Green Mountain Club warns that this may not be the best time for
hiking the Long Trail. Deer hunting season runs through November 26 while Bow and
Arrow and Muzzle Loader season runs December 2 through December 10. If you must hike
they caution you to wear visible, bright clothing (such as fluorescent orange) and to
avoid brown, black, or tan with patches of white. They also recommend leaving your
dog at home or at least putting a fluorescent vest on the dog as well. Visit www.greenmountainclub.org for more information
on precautions or to plan your post-hunting season hikes.
4- Expand Your Horizons
Frequent visitors to Massachusetts Audubon Societys Drumlin Farm and other
eastern Massachusetts sanctuaries should consider a field trip to the Societys
Berkshire Sanctuaries for one of a host of upcoming programs. Did you know there is
still old-growth forest in Massachusetts? Check it out on Sunday, November 19 from
8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a trip to the Mohawk State Forest. On either Saturday,
November 18 or Saturday, December 9 you can explore a calcareous swamp at Mount Everett
Wildlife Sanctuary. On Saturday, December 16, join Society members in exploring how
the landscape and habitat of western Massachusetts has changed at the Lenox Sanctuary.
Call 413-637-0320 or visit www.massaudubon.org
for more information.
5 - Keep Up the Good Work!
As the days get shorter and the nights get colder, is it getting harder to drag your
recyclables to the curb or truck them over to the towns recycling center? The
Northeast Resource Recovery Association encourages you to keep up the good work.
NRRA sold 25% more recyclables this year than the year before on behalf of Northern
New England towns. This means that your town can move more recyclables out of the
waste stream and into recycled products. NRRA will further expand its support for
town recycling when it moves into its new office in the next few months. Through
more than $30,000 in contributions, NRRA is purchasing property which will serve as both
offices and an operations base for critical equipment such as the "glass
crusher"! Check out www.nrra.homestead.com
or call 603-224-6996 for more information.
